“I think that the primary reason for the great satisfaction of the birthing women that I work with, aside from birth being essentially safe, is that I  allow myself to really love them and to listen to them.

 

The whole idea of keeping an emotional distance from ‘the patient’ has no application to me as a midwife.  The ladies I serve are not patients.  They are my sisters, if only for this part of life’s journey. 

 

How can I expect a woman to share with me such an intimate moment as birth, expect her to totally be herself with me, to be honest with me and to open to her innermost place of strength if I don't have enough respect to listen to her and to love her?

 

I think that’s what it really gets down to- Love and Respect”.

Thank you most of all for your quiet presence and your gentle strength during my labor.  You were such a great help to me there at the end.  I know I could’ve done it without  you, but I am so grateful that I didn't have to. Thank you for consistently acknowledging that our choice to have you present at our delivery was an honor, we knew you felt truly privileged to be a part of this birth. You have a gift, thank you for pursuing it and embracing it with such passion.
